A few months ago now, I was teaching the children from the Bible. The area of our study was Luke where the Bible says:
But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat? (Luke 17:7)
And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink? (Luke 17:8)
Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not. (Luke 17:9)
So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do. (Luke 17:10)
We spent some time explaining how Christians are not extraordinary when they do everything the Bible says to; they are yet unprofitable servants. I began to “wax eloquent” as I brought the illustration home to where my children live at Oberehindenburg Str. 16. “See kids, after you have cleaned your room, done your schoolwork, and finished your chores, you haven’t done anything above and beyond. These are the things that you are commanded to do on a regular basis.”
We always wonder if our kids are listening don’t we? I know we are not the only parents who suspect our kids are watching a movie in their brains while we are talking to them in real life! A few days after I had forgotten all about the valuable lesson bestowed upon the children, I asked Gabriel to get the trash out of the car. Stacy and I had an errand to run and were walking down the street to our house. Gabriel had a large trash bag and was cleaning (and I mean really cleaning) the car out. He had a little hand broom and dust pan and had emptied the car of all junk. Impressed by the grand effort, I yelled across the street; “Good job Gabe! That’s what I call cleaning out the car.” Gabriel stuck his head around the car with a cheesy grin and said, “hey dad; I’m an unreasonable servant.”
They may not understand it all, and may not have the words right; but if we take time to study God’s Word it will not return void. Hey, he sure did a fantastic job on the van and wasn’t looking for a pat on the back. How about you? Are you an unreasonable servant?
