Our Blog Introduction…

Well, along with our new family site, we wanted to have our own blogs. I thought my title “Crazy life of a Missionary wife” was a catchy one, and Kevin wanted one of his own. Unfortunately we can’t figure out how to have two separate blogs. So until we can figure that out, we will have one blog page. However, if you notice on the right under “categories” you will find my posts and Kevin’s post categorized. So you can click on either one of our links to read our posts separately. HA! I hope that makes sense. Hopefully we can get this little bug figured out soon :-) I hope you will enjoy reading our thoughts and our experiences here in Germany!

A New Appreciation

Boy am I glad to be on this side of last week! The fun started as I was awakened at 0 dark thirty by gagging Bella. She was standing over my face and about to vomit. She says, “Dad, I feel like I’m gonna’ puke! ‘GET AWAY FROM ME!” I yelled pointing to the bathroom. “IF YOU’RE GONNNA PUKE, DON’T YOU DARE DO IT ON ME OR MY BED!” I roared, waking everyone up. I mean really, the nerve of that girl. She thinks I am going to hold the vomit down or catch it or something? I don’t know, but she managed to make it to the toilet.
By the end of the day, 5 kids were tossing their cookies all over the house. To make matters worse, our tiny little 11 Kilo washing machine (considered commercial size in Germany) was malfunctioning. It would not complete the spin cycle indicating an out of balance error. Good grief! Puke over every piece of clothing and blanket, and no washing machine. Stacy and I were at our wits end to say the least.
For the first time since beginning, we were forced to cancel church services at the church. It wouldn’t hardly be polite to invite guests into this warzone of flying vomit, so we contacted our folks and gave them the sad news.
I must say, I haven’t appreciated my health before like I did this morning when I woke up and everyone was feeling better. Stacy and I went for a nice long walk with Elijah and Micaiah. The warm sun in the morning and the fresh air was invigorating. Praise God for good health! May we never take it for granted.

A Great Son

A few days ago I gave a “shout out” to the World’s Greatest Dad. Today I want to give a “shout out” (love that phrase LOL!) to a great Son. Now I can’t say that he is the greatest, because with 6 other children, that wouldn’t be right. I certainly don’t want to be accused of picking favorites amongst my children. They are all my favorite and I love each of them very much! However, these past few days I have been alone with the other kids, while Kevin and Josiah are at a mandatory field conference from our Mission board. I was unable to travel since I just had the c-section 3 weeks ago. Traveling and staying at a hotel with a newborn baby and 6 other kids was not my idea of a restful, healing time. I decided it would be best for Josiah to go with Kevin to have some father-son bonding time. Josiah wanted to go, but he also didn’t want to leave me alone with a new baby and all the other kids knowing that it is a lot of work. Kevin and I decided it would be good for him to go, in spite of the fact that it would be taking away my greatest helper. My teenage neighbor agreed to come over and help me each day if I needed it. Since Josiah and Kevin are gone, I am reminded of how much help Josiah is around the house. At 13, he can handle a great deal of responsibility if needed. When I am up late with a baby and Kevin has to leave early in the morning for language school, Josiah has no problem waking up and helping each of the younger ones with breakfast while Mom sleeps. When needed, he helps with each kid making sure they are doing right and getting their chores done. He frequently volunteers to make meals because he loves to cook, and at times he offers to babysit while Kevin and I go to the local bakery (across the street) for a cup of coffee so we can have a little break. What a fantastic kid! Sometimes I forget that he is only 13 because of the level of maturity he holds. I have to remind myself that he is indeed still a kid, and while he is growing into a fine young man, he needs time to be a kid and enjoy his childhood. I hate to see these precious years pass so quickly. He has been so sweet to call me each day telling me that they are coming home soon, and he is praying that I would not be so stressed with all the work there is to do around here. What a thoughtful Son! I just wanted to say how thankful I am to God for a great Son. I have a feeling that he is going to make a great husband some day! (a long, long time from now of course! HA!) I also thank God for each of my 6 other children. Even though they are not able to help as much as Josiah can due to their younger age, they are each a special part to this family and a blessing to Kevin and I! We are a very blessed family :-)

World’s Greatest Dad

Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate. Psalms 127:3-5

Father’s Day 2011 is here, and I couldn’t let it go by without giving a “shout out” to the World’s Greatest Dad. I’m sure there are a lot of wives who would claim that their husband is the World’s Greatest Dad, but I have to say that my husband truly is. Now, he would argue with me of course, and tell me that he is far from the greatest Father. There are probably a list of things that he would like to change about his parenting skills, and sure, we can all improve on our parenting. But I still think that my husband is deserving of the title. I remember when we found out we were pregnant with our first child. We had only been married for 3 months, newlyweds. We were still getting used to each other and the married life. Having a baby was the farthest thing from our minds. I was so nervous to tell Kevin and was sure that he would be upset. I remember praying that he would be happy when I told him. When he came home from work that day I nervously gave him the news. To my surprise, he was very happy and excited when I told him he was going to be a Daddy! He has had the same, joyous reaction with all 7 of our kids now. Kevin has spoiled and taken care of me through 7 pregnancies. He was by my side through all the morning, afternoon, and evening sicknesses. He’s spent hours rubbing away the aches and pains, helping with the headaches, foot aches, and discomfort. He was there with all the births, holding my hand, encouraging me and loving me the entire time. He was there to cut the chords and cuddle each baby that came, holding them for hours afterwards when I didn’t have the strength to do so. I can’t even begin to count the number of diapers he has changed with each kid. He’s held them through the nights when they cried so Mommy could sleep, he’s helped feed them, bathe them, dress them and care for them. He’s spent time with each of them, reading to them, wrestling with them, playing with them, singing to them. He’s been their Pastor, their teacher, their school principle, their Doctor. He has spent more time with each of them than most Fathers ever spend with their children. He is such a Godly example to our kids. I pray that as each of the kids grow up, they will see how blessed they were to have the Father they had. I pray they never regret their childhood, and especially the wonderful Father God has blessed them with! I couldn’t ask for a better Father for my children. Happy Father’s Day Kevin!! We love you!

Pasta is Lucas

We try, (as I believe most parents to) to teach our children good manors, politeness, courtesy, please, thank you, and so on. I have personally changed my vocabulary quite a bit since having children old enough to talk. Let’s face it, although I don’t ever use curse words; some things Christian adults say (shall we say) in place of curse words sound terrible in the mouth of little ones. Perhaps we are just kidding ourselves when we think it sounds alright when we say these things.

Let me give you an example. Quite some time ago, little 3 year old Noah was calling a neighborhood boy named Lucas dumb. We quickly corrected this and explained that we don’t call people dumb. I think we got him cured of that, but I have learned that all children relapse at some point. In any case; Noah knows we don’t say “Lucas is dumb.”

Tonight, Josiah made Pasta for dinner. He is quite the helper I might add. Always working, cleaning, and cooking. A pretty great kid! Well, Noah didn’t want pasta for dinner and started yelling “pasta is dumb!” Stacy (once again) corrected the little mouth and said “hey! we don’t say pasta is dumb.” The clever tike never missed a beat when he replied, “pasta is Lucas!”

For those of you who have lost your edge and your mind is not quite as fresh as our little 3 year old. If A equals B, and B equals C, than A equals C too. Since Lucas is dumb and pasta is dumb, but Noah can’t say pasta is dumb; he settled for calling pasta, Lucas. In the famous words of Charlie Brown; GOOD GRIEF!

Home in Heaven

1Thessalonians 4:13-14  But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

Last night at 4:30 am I received the phone call which I have been waiting  several days for. My dear Step-Mother Sandy went home to be with the Lord. Her passing was a peaceful one, but also one which was very unexpected. It was nearly a month ago now that Sandy suffered a stroke. After being rushed to the hospital the doctors performed a variety of tests to find the cause of the stroke. We waited several days for the results when another dreaded word entered into our lives…cancer. Just a little over a year ago Kevin lost his Mother to cancer. With her it seemed that we had more time to spend, talking with her, seeing her go through the chemo and struggles of her health. That wasn’t the case with Sandy. Everything happened so quickly and our minds are still spinning. It turned out that she had a very rare type of cancer that the doctors could not treat. They were still doing more tests though and during that time Sandy suffered several, small strokes.  Doctors estimated her time left to be about 6 months. After learning how extensive the cancer was throughout Sandy’s body, the doctors were not able to pursue any type of treatment and gave Sandy even less time than originally thought.  Her health started to decline fast. Within a month of her first stroke and learning about the news, she passed away. What a very bleak and unexpected time for the family, especially my father. But there was one glimmer of joy during this time!  Sandy gave her heart to the Lord and accepted Him as her Saviour. If it wasn’t for that, Sandy’s passing would truly be a devastating one. But because of the prayers (specifically those of 3 kids!) and the almighty mercy and grace of God, we can be happy for Sandy now that she is home in Heaven. Her last days weren’t the most pleasant, but where she is now surpasses any place we could ever imagine! What a tremendous thought to close your eyes here on earth and then wake up in Glory! Sandy received the hope of a better place when she accepted the Lord as her Saviour, and according to I Thessalonians, I don’t need to sorrow for her; I can be happy for her!

It was around 15 years ago now when I first met Sandy. I met her when I returned home from Bible College. I can’t remember the exact details of our first meeting, but I do remember quickly getting to know and like her. She was an open book and didn’t have trouble telling you what was on her mind, and letting you into her heart. She had never had kids of her own, so she was eager to accept me and my brother as her own kids. When Kevin asked my Dad for permission to marry me 14 years ago, he initially said no. My Dad was not ready to give his young daughter to marriage, but Sandy seemed to be a romantic at heart. It was through the persuasiveness of Sandy (and much prayer!), he finally said yes. Thank you Sandy! When our kids started to come, Sandy never saw them as anything less than HER grandchildren. She loved each of them with a Motherly love. She was the classic Mom-Mom spoiling each of the kids rotten. If Mom and Dad said no, surely Mom-Mom would say yes! If the kids were interested in a certain gift and Mom-Mom got wind of it, she easily convinced Pop-Pop to buy it for the kids. She enjoyed when the kids came to visit, which sadly was not very often since we traveled a lot. She was truly a wonderful woman with a giving heart of gold! My Dad has always been very busy working a lot, but I knew if I called, Sandy would answer the phone and talk to me for long periods of time wanting to know everything that was happening here. She had no problem remembering ALL the grand kids names and their birthdays! That is a tough job with all the grandchildren they have!

I tried to call Sandy each day while she was in the hospital and during her short time in Rehab. The stroke had effected her memory and I didn’t want her to forget me. I would ask her if she remembered who I was and she answered “of course I remember you! you’re my daughter!” She had trouble remembering the kids names and the names of others at the end, but up until a few days before her death, she remembered me and I am very touched by that. I’ve had the opportunity to know and love Sandy for only a short time, but I will always remember her as a wonderful Step-mother and Mom-Mom. She was a true Gem and I am so thankful that the Lord saw fit to take her home to Heaven with him. I know she will be there waiting to greet me when I get there. It makes waiting for my turn to go to Heaven a sweeter one!

Micaiah James Byers

We have a new addition to the Byers Clan. Precious little Micaiah (Mik-eye-ah) was born on May 24, 2011. He is now 9 days old and is loved by all in the home. Everyone stands in line for a chance to hold little Micaiah. Even 1 year old Elijah excitedly shouts “BABY!” each time he sees Micaiah, and gives him lots of kisses. He was born at 8:30 am Berlin time in Neuendettelsau, Germany. He was 7 lbs 3 oz and 20 inches long. Everything is done in Metrics here, so we had to wait until we got home to figure out his measurements in U.S Standard :-) Micaiah was my 6th c-section, so we weren’t sure how things would go during the surgery. Things can get pretty risky the more C-sections one has. We went into the operation knowing that the Lord was in control. I had some minor setbacks such as getting sick on the operating table, and a very weak uterus that the Dr was concerned about. Micaiah would never show himself very clearly during any of the ultrasounds, so I was starting to think that maybe he was hiding something such as a third eyeball or what-have-you LOL! But out came a very healthy, beautiful, LOUD, baby boy. We were all very relieved!

Many ask “how did you come up with the name Micaiah?” Kevin was having personal devotions one day, and then came downstairs to call the family together to share what he had read. He read to us from I Kings 22 and taught us about a prophet named Micaiah. The King of Judah and the King of Israel (Jehoshaphat and Ahab) were planning to go into battle together and wanted to inquire of the Lord whether or not they should go. So they called 400 prophets together and all the prophets told them that they should go and the Lord would deliver the land into their hands and they would win the battle. Everyone was telling the Kings what they wanted to hear. Then, King Jehoshaphat asked, ” Is there not here a prophet of the LORD besides, that we might enquire of him?” King Ahab answered in I Kings 22 verse 8… And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may enquire of the LORD: but I hate him; for he doth not prophesy good concerning me, but evil.
Micaiah was a man who didn’t bow to pressure or compromise his beliefs just because they were unpopular. He wasn’t afraid to say the words that the Lord gave to him. Out of 400 prophets (of which the Bible says had a lying spirit), He was the only one who unashamedly told the Kings the words of the Lord. Because of it, he was thrown in prison. We don’t hear much of Micaiah other than this chapter, but his testimony is a strong, Godly one.

We decided on the middle name James in honor of my childhood Pastor, James Doster. His faithfulness to the Lord pointed me to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ at the age of 14. Pastor Doster and his family helped me to grow in Christ and they have a huge part in where I am today. I can not thank them enough for their faithfulness to Christ, and the love they’ve shown to me throughout these 19 years. Pastor Doster has also been very close to our ministry here in Germany as he has spent countless hours talking, mentoring, and praying for us since our arrival 2 years ago. His church faithfully keeps in contact with us and prays for us. We are their Missionaries, and they make sure to show us their love and support. We are very thankful for each of them. After choosing the name James, we also saw it a fitting name as this year we celebrate the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible. A Bible that we believe to be the perfect, preserved, inherent Word of God. We thank God for Pastor James Doster, and we also thank God for the King James Bible! :-)

Our main concern now is trying to get him to eat as much as he should so he can gain the weight that he needs. His main priority seems to be sleeping at this point, so making him eat has been a bit of a challenge. I’m sure in a few years, that won’t be a problem at all. The only problem we will have is trying to feed 6 boys without going broke! :-) Kevin and the kids have done a wonderful job taking care of me, and all the housework so I can relax and heal. I am thankful for each of them for their love and hard work!

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. We appreciate them all.
Stacy

I need a sword!

I need a sword, a weapon, or something to defend myself. Have you ever experienced the desperate need for some spiritual weapon while serving the Lord? Has the Lord ever brought you to a place where you were on the run, defensive, under attack, with few options available? David was in that place as King Saul made plans to slay him. Thankfully, David’s friendship with Jonathan preserved the young shepherd’s life. You know, friends will either get you into trouble, or keep you out!

David made a break for the priest in Nob and took the showbread for his meal. Later, Jesus would use this example in his ministry while explaining the difference between the letter and spirit of the Law. While David certainly needed nourishment, he also needed a weapon. Sadly, he was being hunted by his own king. In my experience, “brothers and sisters” in Christ often pose a greater threat than the Devil himself. You don’t expect it from family!

And David said unto Ahimelech, And is there not here under thine hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business required haste. (1 Samuel 21:8)

And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: if thou wilt take that, take it: for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me. (1 Samuel 21:9)

It amazes me that David’s weapon came from a previously fought battle. I believe there is a strong analogy that can be drawn from this story and applied to our lives. May I suggest the next time you feel as though you are running from spiritual danger; your best weapon may come from a previous battle? While living in the past can be dangerous, forgetting the past is also unhealthy. When you win a battle, don’t forget what you learned in the process. There just may be some tool God intends for you to use in the future. Do you need a sword, a weapon, or something to defend yourself from the devil’s attack? Why not revisit some past victories granted by the LORD?

He was but a youth!

In the book of Judges, the familiar story of Gideon challenges us to go in God’s strength and fear no enemy regardless of size. With only 300 men, lamps, water pots, and trumpets; the Lord delivered the entire host of Midian into the hands of Israel.

What may not be such common knowledge, is how Gideon perused after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of the Midianites. We see in Chapter 8, two towns refused to feed the army of Gideon while on their way through doing the Lord’s work. It sort of reminds me of the average 10 pastors I would contact before one pastor would allow me to share our ministry in their church.

Once Gideon caught up with these two evil kings, the Bible records this event:

And he said unto Jether his firstborn, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.  (Judges 8:20)

Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels’ necks.  (Judges 8:21)

The Bible says Gideon’s son was afraid to slay the kings because he was yet a youth. My first thought was “hey, King David was a youth when he killed Goliath wasn’t he?” Notice these verses:

And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.  (1 Samuel 17:33)

King Saul was accustom to “hiding in the stuff” so he didn’t quite know how to handle this guy who feared only GOD. (The fear of man bringeth a snare Proverbs 29:25) If I had listened to everyone who told me “it can’t be done,” I wouldn’t be here in Germany, that’s for sure. David displayed the power of his GOD by toppling the Giant with a small stone. After the *thud* and assumed roar of the crowd, this “youth” confirmed his kill.

So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.  (1 Samuel 17:50)

Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.  (1 Samuel 17:51)

As I always tell Stacy when teaching her self defense, “dead men tell no tales.” Don’t ever give that criminal a chance to lie in a court of law and put you away forever. Make sure he is dead! When eliminating sin out of ones life, I recommend making sure it’s DEAD!

Now then, back to Gideon’s son. Why didn’t he slay those kings on the command of his father? He was yet a youth. The youth issue didn’t pose a problem for David did it? How about when Paul told Timothy, “let no man despise thy youth.” You know what I think? Teenagers could do a lot more for God than people realize. Society expects little more out of our youth than to hang out with friends, download i-tunes, post on facebook, and play video games.

I learned a secret as a young man. Young people are normally afraid, however; Christians are commanded not to be afraid. Yong people are often like animals who puff themselves up or flair their feathers in order to ward off predators. The little critter is scared out of it’s mind, but it puts on a show in hopes of chasing away the danger. Press the issue with these and they normally tuck tail and run. Likewise, when a spirit filled Christian youth is not afraid; he can accomplish great things for God. He can be a leader among his piers. He can share the message of the Gospel without shame or fear and others will listen. Many will admire the courage and see an example worth following. What about you? If you saw how big GOD is, you wouldn’t hesitate because of fear. CHARGE THE LINE!!!

Your feet smell good!

Yesterday I was watching something on my computer with Stacy. To afford myself some extra comfort (as I am often want to do), I stretched my legs by putting my feet up on the desk. “Get those out of my face” were the first words my wife uttered, but then; “hey, your feet smell good” followed.

In all my years (totaling 13) with my adoring wife, she has NEVER said my feet smell good. I took it as a compliment. In fact, in flattered me. Something was amiss (or afoot as the case may be). I took quick inventory of my memories to recall what might be to blame for my feet smelling good.  What did I do differently.

Just a few days ago, the snow began to fall and in compliance with German law, I had removed the snow from our sidewalk. I wore my military issue black leather combat boots to do this. My boots smell like leather, but that only smells good to guys. But wait, I remembered! Last year in the summer time, Noah was scouting the house (as his manner was/is) searching what he may fold, spindle, mutilate, or otherwise sabotage. Stacy and I both suspect Noah has ties to some terrorist organization because of the acts of terror he practices around the house. He found two items of interest. The first, was a Yankee candle, (a gift from me to my wife); the other was none other than my military boots. He emptied the sweet vanilla perfume from the candle into my combat boots and left the empty container as evidence. I think we wishes to receive the credit once the attack has been made.

Well, I soaked my boots in the tub overnight and dried them on the back porch. The smell was still too strong for any man to wear the boots without some element of shame. I left the said boots in the attic over the summer and into the fall. When it started getting cold out, I began wearing the boots and never noticed the vanilla. In fact, I had forgotten about the whole episode until Stacy commented on my sweet smelling feet. At this point, the perfume in my boots is the perfect potency. No one notices unless I take my boots off and put my feet in their face. I only put my feet in Stacy’s face occasionally, so I don’t see any losers in this situation.

In summary, if you have a severe problem with foot odor; you may have just learned a valuable trick. Leave a comment if you try it and your wife also thinks your feet smell good.

Thank you for me

A few days ago, while seated at the dinner table; I selected Caleb to ask the blessing on the food. With typical Caleb mannerisms he began, “thank you for Daddy, thank you for siah (josiah) thank you for Bella, thank  you for lisha (Elijah), thank you for …. hmmm, thank you for Mommy, thank you for Noah, thank you for Gabriel, and thank you for me.

Amen

Unreasonable Servants

A few months ago now, I was teaching the children from the Bible. The area of our study was Luke where the Bible says:

But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat? (Luke 17:7)
And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink? (Luke 17:8)
Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not. (Luke 17:9)
So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do. (Luke 17:10)

We spent some time explaining how Christians are not extraordinary when they do everything the Bible says to; they are yet unprofitable servants. I began to “wax eloquent” as I brought the illustration home to where my children live at Oberehindenburg Str. 16. “See kids, after you have cleaned your room, done your schoolwork, and finished your chores, you haven’t done anything above and beyond. These are the things that you are commanded to do on a regular basis.”

We always wonder if our kids are listening don’t we? I know we are not the only parents who suspect our kids are watching a movie in their brains while we are talking to them in real life! A few days after I had forgotten all about the valuable lesson bestowed upon the children, I asked Gabriel to get the trash out of the car. Stacy and I had an errand to run and were walking down the street to our house. Gabriel had a large trash bag and was cleaning (and I mean really cleaning) the car out. He had a little hand broom and dust pan and had emptied the car of all junk. Impressed by the grand effort, I yelled across the street; “Good job Gabe! That’s what I call cleaning out the car.” Gabriel stuck his head around the car with a cheesy grin and said, “hey dad; I’m an unreasonable servant.”

They may not understand it all, and may not have the words right; but if we take time to study God’s Word it will not return void. Hey, he sure did a fantastic job on the van and wasn’t looking for a pat on the back. How about you? Are you an unreasonable servant?

If you drive me there…

This little guy likes swords.

Our kids, (like most kids) often say things that just nearly put us in stitches laughing at them. Caleb is at the age where he is becoming very expressive with his thoughts and trying to get them out. The poor lad has a lot of trouble pronouncing his”L” sounds and they come out with a “sh” sound instead. Caleb does not “love me” he “shoves” me. He doesn’t think he is a “little” guy, he refers to himself as just a “shittle” guy, and so on.

A few weeks ago he asked Stacy if he may have a water gun for his birthday. Stacy said, “sure buddy, I think we can get you a squirt gun.” The youngster promptly replied “thanks mom, I knew I could count on you.” Stacy began laughing at the little goof and Caleb said “I learned that on nansha.” What? Stacy asked. “Nansha!” he repeated, a little louder this time. Stacy asked the third time and this clearly frustrated our Caleb. “I can’t talk very good” he says. Then he says, you know – NA na na NA na na NA na na NA an na NA, NA na na NA na na” .. “Oh,” Stacy said, Bonanza!. “Yea,” he said, “Nansha.

A little while later, Caleb says (as seriously as anyone could be) “mom, if you drive me there; I can save the world.” This little guy has some big aspirations. You know something? I’ve a half a mind to drive him there just to see if he can.

Poems by Josiah

Josiah was very inspired by the new book we received ‘Poems by a Cowboy Preacher’ that he decided to write some of his own!

Your Heart’s Door

When Jesus knocks at your heart’s door
will you answer, or will you ignore?
Will you be rude and say “go away!”
or will you say “come in and stay?”

The Bible

When God wrote the Bible, he wrote it through men,
and then it was published again and again.
It’s purpose is to share the Gospel with you and me,
so through the Cross of Calvary salvation we might see.
So when you read the Bible you’ll see it clear and plain,
you can only get to Heaven by trusting in JESUS’ name!

More to be published soon ;-

Poems of a Cowboy Preacher

Is there any greater joy in this world than the experience of leading a lost soul to faith in Jesus Christ? If there is, it must be the joy of leading your own children to the Savior. At the time of this writing, I have experienced such joy three times and look forward to the prospect of hearing the rest of my children call upon the name of the Lord in Acts 16 fashion.

The Couch Altar

This couch was the altar where I called on the name of Jesus.

Can children understand such things as redemption, forgiveness of sins, propitiation, and atonement? Well, I remember vividly my meeting with Jesus as a five year old boy. I still can’t spell any of those words without the help of my word processor but I know that I am saved. In my limited understanding, I knew that I had sinned against almighty God and I would be punished for my sin forever and ever and ever in a fiery place called Hell. Kneeling beside me that day was my father, Gary Byers; who was leading his third child to Jesus.

Dad with some of my kids and some of my sister's kids.

Dad with my and my sister's kids

All five of dad’s children profess Jesus as their Savior and to my knowledge; all his grandchildren above the age of seven have called on that wonderful name. I think this number comes to eleven grand children who profess to be saved by faith alone in Jesus. Add this to his five children and you have a total of sixteen family members who trust they are ready for the rapture of the Church soon to take place. Only God knows the hearts and I realize that profession of Jesus does not necessarily prove possession, but we have been blessed with a goodly heritage nonetheless.

By now I hope you are wondering how my dad came to know the Lord. He was not raised in a godly home. On the contrary, my dad’s parents divorced when he was young. Yes, divorce is still sin even in 2010 and will continue to be sin forever. My grandparents on dad’s side smoked, drank, and frequented the nightclubs. Dad says their main goal in life seemed to be “having a ball”, and so they did. God was only a curse word in that home. I remember visiting my grandparent’s home and hearing the Lords name used in ways I had never heard before. Church wasn’t on the schedule in dads broken home.

When my grandpa Byers was on his death bed with cancer, my dad was broken over his soul. He wanted one last chance to speak to grandpa about the Lord, but the stepmother wasn’t going to make it easy. For several days grandpa was in and out of a coma at his house in Oregon. The family took turns watching him and dad was taking his turn when grandpa Byers sat up in bed one night. Earlier dad tried to speak with him but to no avail. This night, grandpa Byers looked right at my dad and said “Gary, could God save an old sinner like me?” Well GLORY TO GOD and PRAISE THE LORD! Chalk up four generations of Byers’ for the family reunion in Heaven. No, the circle won’t be broken.

So then, it wasn’t grandpa Melville Byers who planted the seed, watered it, and then picked the fruit. This line of born again, blood washed, heaven bound Baptist believers that currently stretches four generations started when a young boy named Buddy Brock invited my dad to church. At the age of fourteen, my dad attended a Baptist Church in Camas Washington and heard Pastor Lee Brock preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The spirit filled preacher offered an invitation for sinners to come to Christ and the preacher’s four year old son spoke to my dad while standing on the pew next to him. “Gary, don’t you want to get saved?” were the simple words uttered by the boy. My dad said that’s all the nudge he needed to walk the isle of that little Baptist church and get saved.

Although we have never met, my dad has repeated this story so many times that I feel I know Pastor Brock. The Lord called me to be a preacher not long after finishing High School. Currently I am planting a Baptist church in Illeshiem Germany. About three years ago while traveling across the United States seeking support to begin our ministry here in Germany; I received an e-mail from Pastor Lee Brock. He wanted to know if I may be related to a Gary Byers. Apparently, Pastor Brock found my website on the internet. I was thrilled to answer the e-mail and thank this man of God for impact he has made in my life. If Bro. Brock only had one convert during his time in Camas Washington, I would praise God through all eternity for this preacher answering God’s call. I am so glad Bro. Brock had never heard of this nonsense about “the 10/40 window.” (my preacher friends will understand what I mean by that) Can I tell you that we are not done yet? By God’s grace, we plan to win many more souls to Jesus. In our first year here we led four people to Christ

and baptized one.  I am certain that Bro. Brock will be rewarded by God for each and every soul that was saved as a result of his obedience to God. I could hardly believe it when the Brocks began

supporting our ministry financially each month. We have still never met and perhaps never will until Heaven.

A few weeks ago I received an E-mail from Pastor Brock. He has written a book called “The Poems of a Cowboy Preacher.” The book can be purchased on Amazon at this link, and I can’t wait to read it. May I recommend this book to you before I have even read it? This was written by a man who made a difference for the cause of Jesus Christ.

Bella turns 7!

Well, it has been a while since I have written a post. I am kind of behind in things, and trying my best to get things organized. Since we still do not have a vehicle for the moment, Bella’s birthday wasn’t as fancy as I hoped it would be., but she didn’t seem to complain at all, which I was very happy about. She only had two friends come over, but she enjoyed that. Once we started to sing Happy Birthday to her, we didn’t ever get passed the Birthday part when she blew out all but one of her candles. I had to cover her mouth and keep her from blowing out the last one until we were done singing. I guess she was in a hurry to make that wish :-) The homemade birthday cake came out very tasty. Unfortunately though, everyone only got one piece. Oh, there was enough birthday cake for seconds later, but one of the little ones decided to catch the rest of the birthday cake on fire. As I was walking down the hallway, I noticed smoke coming out of the kitchen. I shouted “what’s on fire?!” everyone ran to the kitchen and saw that the plastic container that held the cake was on a burner which had been turned on. So the cake was burning and we were sucking in toxic fumes haha…. We quickly handled the situation and threw out the remaining cake.  We couldn’t even feed that to the neighbors pigs! ;-) At least we were all able to enjoy one piece before we had to throw it out! Happy Birthday Bella!!

Bayerische Semmelklösse

Bayerische Semmelklösse

Bayerische Semmelklösse

A few weeks ago, I went to help the sheep community install a new roof for their hay barn. Lunch was served at the Linsenbreit home and Oma Babette made a wonderful lunch.

Something about the German food is just plain wonderful, but something about Frankish food (Bavaria) is even better. I just had to ask the name of this wonderful dish and Andrea said it was Bayerische Semmelklösse. I tried several times to say that, and each time I was corrected. I even spit and nearly swallowed my tongue while attempting to say it, but still to no avail.

No matter what you call it, I knew I had to eat more of it. I took the liberty of setting up a cooking lesson for my wife. After exhausting my German vocabulary and playing a short game of charades, Babette agreed to teach the art of Bayerische Semmelklösse cooking to my lovely bride. Stacy was a little skeptical at first, but in true Bayerishe fashion, the Linsenbreits sent Stacy home with a large portion of the dish they had made together. They were only supposed to teach Stacy and eat the soup themselves; but our neighbors are just the kind to give you the shirt off their backs.

Bayerische Semmelklösse perfected!

Stacy really outdid herself with this fine dish!

Well, Stacy gave the dish a go and I must say; she did quite well. One of the downsides was the extra butter she used in the bread crumb mixture. By the second time she made the meal, it was absolutely perfect. Now, Stacy really wants me to say how hers was better than Babbette’s, but I don’t dare insult our generous neighbors with such needless comparison. I am one happy man to be married to Stacy Byers. She is even a better kisser than she is a cook!

Lehrberg in the Winter

We sure do have a lot of snow around here. I don’t even know how much we have, but there are piles of it everywhere. We have been doing our civic duty of shoveling the sidewalk in front of our house and the patio in front of our door. Thankfully, Dieter Lindsenbreit has a large tractor so he can pick up the large piles that accumulate in front of our house. Dieter made a little igloo for the kids with his tractor as a result of scooping up all the piles of snow around the farm.

We were able to take two trips to the large hill just half a mile from our house. There is plenty of snow on the hill but it takes some work getting to the top. The kids finally got the hang of staying on the sled all the way to the bottom. Our neighbors are so kind to us and they loaned us several toboggans and sleds.

We really don’t have to get out if we don’t want to. The bakery is right across the street and the market is right next to that. The Lindsenbreit Hoffladen is next door and we can purchase all the eggs, wurst, and pig meat we need. Getting snowed in isn’t really a fear, perhaps its a nice treat. It’s funny watching the little baby goats in the back yard. Several were born just last month and they sure are frisky in the fresh snow. They jump all over the place and butt heads to play.

Chocolate Chip Blessings…

The Lord really showed Himself to me the other day and it was just what I needed.  I don’t think I am the only Christian that feels “down in the dumps” every now and then and really needs to see something special from the Lord. Since we have been in Germany, satan has thrown one curve ball after another to cause us to feel discouraged and defeated and I must admit, sometimes he nearly won with me. Since I have been here I have often called out to the Lord and asked Him where He was, and why wasn’t He fighting for me. Of course He is, and He has never forsaken me just as He promised! I like to blame my womanly “hormones” too often, but the plain fact of it is, my discouragement is sin. But the Lord knew that I needed a blessing so I could see that He was still with me, and on Saturday He gave that blessing to me in the form of chocolate chips :-)

Just a little background info so you can better appreciate this story…

Our vehicle has been out of commission for a little while.  We have one local store here in our village that is more of a “mom and pop” shop. All of our grocery shopping has been done there, at the local bakery, and our neighbors small farm. It has been interesting and I am starting to get used to the German food.I have even started to learn now to order my lunch meat in grams at the market. Those poor ladies probably dread when I come in! ha! But since we have not had the car over the holidays, I had to miss out on cooking all the traditional food that we were used to eating on Christmas/New Years. I cooked a ham on Christmas since we have been married. Since they don’t sell hams here, I had to cook a goose instead. It was very good and we enjoyed it though! I wasn’t able to cook alot of the holiday cookies and other baking that we normally did, and I was feeling a little blue about it. When I ran out of chocolate chip morsels, I really got discouraged! haha..I had used up my last bag on some cookies and Bella and I were wondering where we were going to get more. I was telling Kevin my “woes”….”we are here, in a strange country…I can’t cook a ham…I can’t get hot chocolate….and I’M ALL OUT OF CHOCOLATE CHIP MORSELS!!!!” As I told Kevin all my problems, he looked at me like I was crazy. He proceeded to count all the blessings for me, but I was too busy pining over all the american food I missed and the fact that we didn’t have a car to go grocery shopping. Our cupboards were bare, and the market was closed for the holidays!

On Saturday, the big grocery store opened up in the next city, We decided to walk there as a family while it was lightly snowing outside. We thought it would be an adventure for all of us to get out of the house and get some exercise. 7 Kilometers didn’t seem that far away! We were quickly realizing how far 7 Km was with 6 kids and the snow coming down. For those of you who are like me, and don’t know your Km measurements…7 km is roughly 4 1/2  miles away. So that is around 9 miles total..walking with 6 kids, in the snow, to get some groceries!  We were regretting our decisions but we just wanted to get to the store to get warm and get some food. We loaded up two backpacks and the bottom of the stroller up at Aldi’s and headed home. That trip was even worse! But thankfully a friend who had called earlier that day and asked if she could drop by with some freezer items and dry goods to give us, saw us on the road and rescued us! We were about 2 miles from our house and we were so glad to get in that warm car! She had to pick us up in two shifts so we could all make it home safely. She had told us that her and her family were going back to the states for 6 months and she didn’t want her food to go bad so she asked if I could use it. Of course you never want to turn down free food so I gladly accepted! She came in with a few large baskets of food. She completely filled up my 3 drawers in my freezer, and filled my pantry cabinets with dry goods. As I was unpacking all this wonderful American food I thought I would never see again, what do you think I saw in those baskets? yes….bags and bags of chocolate chip morsels!!! I was so excited! I didn’t’ ask the Lord for them, but He knew how down I was feeling about silly little things like that and decided to bless me anyway! It was so wonderful, not only the fact that Bella and I can make cookies again, but that the Lord was listening and wanted to give me some encouragement! It is good to know that the Lord is still with me, hearing my prayers, listening to my pathetic woes, and giving me chocolate chip blessings :-)

P.S. I did finally locate some kako (cocoa) for some hot chocolate, and a box of shokolade trink (the German version of hot chocolate mix) at the store the other day :-) The kids are glad for that in this cold, snowy weather!

A Good Day made better with snow

Today we enjoyed many blessing from the Lord. I was able to construct a makeshift pulpit using a school desk with a table cloth over it and a wood box turned upside down and set on top of the desk. Things were much easier with a pulpit for leading singing and preaching. I thank the Lord for people who are willing to learn the Bible and remain faithful to assemble together under the sound of the Gospel.

I challenged the people today out of II Timothy Chapter 4. Here is the message as I shared it with our small congregation:

What we can expect while planting a church
II Timothy 4

1. Some will forsake us “Demas hath forsaken me” (vs. 10)
A. II Timothy 3:12 – We are promised persecution.
B. I John 2:18, 19 – God will purify His church.
C. John 6:53-56 – Jesus had the same problem.

2. Some will do us evil “Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil” (vs. 14)
A. Matthew 5:10-12 – God has a blessing for those who are persecuted.
B. James 1:2-4 – The trying of your faith worketh patience.
C. Matthew 26:47-50 – Jesus had the same problem.

3. The Lord will stand with us “The Lord Stood with me” (vs. 17)
A. I Samuel 15:29 – With strength, (vs 17)
B. I Corinthians 1:18 – Preserving the preaching, (vs 17)
C. Acts 13:47 – To deliver the Gospel to the Gentiles; (vs 17)
D. Psalm 34:19 – And delivering the saint from evil. (vs 18)
E. Matthew 27:46 For our sake, Jesus was not given the same luxury.

The song service was wonderful and we took some extra time to sing favorites. After church, I snapped this photo from our window. I think Lehrberg is beautiful in the winter, but spring is even better. After church, the kids went outside to play in the snow.
