Dear Church,
We love summertime in Astoria! Warm, dry days are always welcome after the long, gloomy months. This year God blessed us with a clear, dry summer, but the sight of fall decorations reminds us how brief it is. Likewise, as the world unravels, we see the signs of the times—Jesus is coming soon!
This summer we also witnessed a forsaking of the assembly. We had hoped for spiritual growth, but the parable of the sower was lived out before us as some were choked by the cares of life. Still, we press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God. Your cards, gifts, and encouragement have reminded us we are not alone in the work.
Our Old-Fashioned Gospel Meeting was a blessing to our family. Pastor and Mrs. Perkins from Bible Baptist Church in Coquille came, and Pastor Derek Seeley closed the meeting with strong preaching. The services and music were uplifting, and visitors from out of town encouraged us greatly! Sadly, our own people mostly shunned the meeting, which was heartbreaking. Only God can bring lasting change here.
The city charged us $300 while refusing to allow our 40×60 tent, yet at the same time directed taxpayer funds toward repairing a building, which it then leased to a new brewery. To make matters more personal, the wife of the bar owner struck our van while intoxicated, first admitting to drinking, then later denying it, though the accident was caught on video. God, however, saw every detail more clearly than the camera ever could! In spite of such trials, we believe the Lord still wants to do a work in Astoria, and we are thankful you continue to take part with us.
Several churches have closed since our arrival, including the Christian Church and the Methodist Church, neither willing to give up their buildings. Yet God has called us here for such a time as this. We hold the true Gospel and the willingness to share it. The work is hard, but your prayers and support keep us going.
Thank you for lifting us before the Lord and standing with us financially. We are blessed!
